‘When S*** Like That Happens, I Don’t Let It Slide’

It’s hard for people to know how to react when something life-changing happens, especially if it doesn’t seem like the event should have been a surprise. How do you handle “bad news” that you feel was just waiting for someone else?

“When S*** Like That Happens, I Don’t Let It Slide” is a phrase that has been used by many people. The “lakers gatorade” is an example of what can happen when things go wrong.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been working hard to integrate a plethora of recently acquired veterans, with mixed results thus far. LA made numerous changes this offseason, but the most notable was the signing of Russell Westbrook, who will join LeBron James and Anthony Davis as the team’s trio.

Westbrook just recorded his first triple-double with the Lakers, but it came in a defeat to the winless Oklahoma City Thunder, as the Lakers lost a 26-point first-half lead. The last nail in the coffin for OKC’s 123-115 victory came in the closing seconds on a breakaway slam by guard Darius Bazley.

Westbrook made it apparent that he didn’t like Bazley’s decision, and his outburst over it has obscured LA’s greatest flaw so far in 2021-22.

Westbrook and the Lakers let a 26-point lead slip away.

In the first quarter, LA blasted the game open, scoring 41 points on their way to a 41-19 advantage after 12 minutes.

In the second quarter, the Lakers’ quick shooting put them ahead by 26 points. According to NBA.com, Westbrook and his teammates were shooting 68 percent from the field and 62 percent from three at the time.

The Thunder, on the other hand, surged back in the third quarter, outscoring LA by 18 points. Shai Gilgeous-three-pointer Alexander’s at the buzzer gave Oklahoma City its first lead of the night, and the Thunder hung on for their first victory of the season in the fourth quarter.

With four seconds remaining on the clock, Bazley stole an inbounds pass and instead of holding on to the ball and running the time out, he glided down the floor and slammed home a two-handed slam.

Westbrook, understandably, was not pleased with the decision.

The dunk enraged LA’s top guard, who was removed.

Following Bazley’s dunk, Westbrook exchanged words with the fourth-year winger. He then got into a pushing battle with other Thunder players, received his second technical foul, and had to take a shower a few seconds early.

The 2016-17 MVP was booed as he walked off the court in front of his old home fans.

Westbrook was questioned about his displeasure with Bazley’s performance after the game and displayed no remorse, according to ESPN:

“I’m more old-school in my approach to the game.” And when things like that happen, I don’t take them lightly…. There are certain things that you simply don’t do in basketball. You don’t flip the bat as in baseball. When the game is finished, there are several things you don’t do in sports. And that didn’t sit well with me. It’s as simple as that.”

The Brodie’s expulsion, though, buried the lead. Not only did the Lakers lose a game that looked to be a foregone conclusion, but Westbrook also had 10 turnovers. In LA’s defeat to Memphis three nights previously, he had nine turnovers.

The Lakers are having trouble keeping possession of the ball (they rank 10th in the NBA with 16.2 turnovers per game) and defending it (25th in the league in defensive rating). A garbage-time dunk by a youthful rotation player, on the other hand, appeared to matter more to the 14-year veteran.

If the Lakers want to win a championship, Russell Westbrook must make some adjustments.

During his career, the UCLA graduate has averaged a triple-double in four separate seasons. However, he’s also renowned for his quadruple doubles, which regularly result in double-digit turnovers.

James is now sidelined due to an injury. That hurts the Lakers’ chances of winning games, but the combination of Westbrook and Davis should be enough to win games, particularly against a bottom-feeder like Oklahoma City.

However, in five games, the nine-time all-star has 30 turnovers. If Westbrook wants to lift his first Larry O’Brien Trophy at the conclusion of the season, he should focus on hanging onto the ball rather than having a temper tantrum and being tossed over a last-second dunk in a game that was already a defeat.
